How is interest on a Nevada money judgment calculated?
Interest on a Nevada money judgment runs at the NRS 99.040 rate - prime plus 2%, reset every January 1 and July 1 - from the time the judgment sum is ascertainable (NRS 17.130(2)). It applies to any money judgment: damages, attorney or expert fees, equalization payments, spousal-support arrears, and more. The interest is simple, never compound (Torres v. Goodyear, 130 Nev. 22 (2014)).
Is this only for child support?
No. This is a general judgment-interest tool. Every line accrues statutory interest whether or not it is child support. Child support is one line type: flag a line as child support and, for delinquencies before February 1, 2020, the former NRS 125B.095 10%-per-year penalty layers on for that line only. Non-child-support lines accrue interest with no penalty.
Does Nevada allow compound interest on judgments?
No. Absent a statute or agreement to the contrary, Nevada allows only simple interest on judgments (Torres v. Goodyear, 130 Nev. 22 (2014); Campbell v. Lake Terrace, 111 Nev. 1329 (1995)). This calculator computes simple interest only, by design. Federal judgments are different - 28 U.S.C. 1961 compounds annually - which is why the federal option is handled separately.
How is federal post-judgment interest different?
Federal post-judgment interest under 28 U.S.C. 1961 uses the weekly-average 1-year constant-maturity Treasury yield for the calendar week preceding the judgment, fixed at entry and compounded annually. Select the federal rate source to compute it: the calculator uses the official Federal Reserve H.15 weekly 1-year Treasury series (FRED series WGS1YR) and never estimates a rate - a judgment date outside the loaded coverage window returns a clear 'rate unavailable' message instead of a guess.
How are partial payments applied?
Absent a specific designation, Nevada applies partial payments to the oldest portion of the debt first (Foster v. Marshman, 96 Nev. 475 (1980), following Biel v. Godwin, 69 Nev. 189 (1952)). The statutes do not say whether a payment retires principal or accrued interest first; this calculator shows both readings and lets you elect one knowingly.
Does the 10% child support penalty still apply?
Only historically. Former NRS 125B.095 added 10% per year (or portion of a year) to each child-support installment delinquent by a month's support. It was repealed by AB 278 (2017), effective February 1, 2020. Penalties that accrued before that date remain due; nothing accrues on or after it. The penalty applies only to lines flagged as child support.
